 Brill Common & Encroachment

Brill Parish Council has a legal responsibility to protect the common on the behalf of the people of Brill. A crucial part of this is the prevention of encroachment. This letter outlines the responsibilities of residents, especially those living on or adjacent to common land.

A letter sent by the Parish Council
to all Brill households in Spring 2023

Dear Brill Resident

We are extremely lucky in Brill to share an area of beautiful common land and two village greens. These open spaces are a spectacular natural resource which must be protected if they are to remain thus in perpetuity for everyone’s benefit.

As stewards and guardians we, Brill Parish Council, have a legal responsibility to upkeep and manage the common on your behalf. One of our main duties is to protect Brill Common from encroachment which, if left unchecked, would reduce this valuable resource.

Encroachment is any structure or action that implies individual ownership; please read our new Encroachment Policy in conjunction with our Common & Walks Policy (links overleaf) to understand the importance of this concept and or process for dealing with it.

We need your help to protect Brill Common. This is what we would like you to do

  • Be mindful of the existence of the Common and The Walks and what is and isn’t common land. If you see something that appears to be a threat to the integrity of the Common, please email the Parish Council or call the office (details below).

  • Understand and care for the Common and The Walks by reading and following our common policies, picking up litter and respecting our wildlife.

  • Celebrate the Common with us when we Beat the Bounds of Brill Common on Saturday May 20th 2023, walking the boundary of Brill Common and learning more about this fantastic community asset.

To find out more about Brill Common and its management, please visit the Brill Parish Council & Community website. If you suspect an encroachment, please take a photo and send it with covering information to Parish Council.
