Polls & Consultations

Keeping in touch with the Parish Council (February 2022)

Early in 2022, we asked ‘What are your main sources of information about the Parish Council?’ This poll didn’t exactly set the village alight with enthusiasm; only 27 responses were received - but we didn’t find it very exciting either, so we didn’t push it.

It was encouraging to see that the then new newsletter was top source of information - along with a timely reminder not to forget old school comms like the Bernwode News, our printed parish magazine. Joint third was ‘word of mouth’ and ‘Facebook’ - so gossip is alive and well! The parish council website was still an minority interest - and the village had apparently not yet got used to the PC appearing at the community market and/or the market wasn’t getting adequate footfall.

(It might be interesting to repeat this poll early in 2024 to see if the ever-expanding BPC & Community website and new community bulletin boards have changed the picture. We’d also like to see PC meeting become a trusted source of information.

Wildflowers in Brill (February 2022)

There were only 47 replies (last month’s traffic management poll set a high bar!) but some lovely, thoughtful replies nevertheless. Forty-five of the respondents were in favour of patches of wildflowers within the villages. The two dissenters seemed to be lukewarm rather than totally against, citing potential conflict between poppies, cowslips and car parking.

Most people suggested places where we could cultivate wildflowers - although a fair few ignored our instruction that the poll only applied to Brill Village, not The Walks and Common! Rather than try and summarise the suggestions, you may like to read them for yourself.

Parish Council Traffic Management Priorities (Jan 2022)

We asked you to rank four projects in order of importance to you, as a Brill resident. 140 people responded; online (mainly Facebook but some via the website), face-to-face at Brill Community Market and on email. Here are the projects ranked:

  1. Research and implement ways to achieve more considerate parking

  2. Research and install appropriate traffic calming measures

  3. Purchase a new speed indicator sign (SID)

  4. Provide public electric vehicle charging points

Around 50 people then offered comments and suggestions, many at length and covering several topics. Most comments concerned parking followed by speeding, with a handful on EV charging points and other traffic related issues. Read a summary of comments and suggestions.

Would you like Brill to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June next year? (Dec 2021)

The poll only attracted 84 responses on Facebook; maybe in December June seems a long way off! We gathered a further eight opinions at the Community Market on December 18. These are not included in this chart but favoured marking the Jubilee by 7:1.

The aim of these quick and easy polls is to “take the pulse” of the parish. They are devised using a programme called Polls for Pages which is primarily concerned with using Facebook as a vehicle. However, the poll itself is shared using a link and so can be accessed from any media, including email or a website; you do not have to be “on Facebook” to take part. We promote polls on Instagram, our website, in our e-newsletter, and face-to-face at events such as the Community Market. We hope this strategy will, as time goes by, help gather a fair representation of parish opinion.

THE 3 BEST THINGS ABOUT LIVING IN BRILL (Nov 2021)

Our Facebook poll attracted lots of voters; over 10% of the adult population of Brill Parish; which is excellent for this sort of survey. Almost joint winners were Views & Landscape and Community & Neighbours, very closely followed by Environment & Nature.

This poll was a bit of fun on Facebook but it does actually give a fair idea of our priorities. We can support our farmers, keep an eye on large scale development, do our best for the environment - but how do we nurture "community and neighbours"? What can individuals do? What can the parish council do?
