War Memorial Garden The garden needs a bit of TLC, don’t you think? The rosemary bushes have a wonderful fragrance and look lovely when in flower but they’re smothering the roses and other flowers planted amongst them - and they make it very hard to weed effectively, as volunteers past and present have found out. Furthermore, when we prune the bushes - to get at the steps to lay our Remembrance wreaths - we’re cutting into old wood and the result is ugly and jagged. So, what to do? We’re thinking - just thinking! we’re taking this very slowly! - of removing the 2-3 rosemary bushes at the front, leaving the remainder in a protective horseshoe. We’d then like to remove the struggling perennials - we’re not sure what to do with the roses, yet - and fill the open space with seasonal bulbs, starting with snowdrops and small species daffodils and moving onto carefully chosen tulips. Our objective is an attractive, dignified, restful garden, with a cohesive and harmonious planting scheme. It also needs to be easy to maintain, without looking municipal. Finally, although we’re very grateful to residents who have voluntarily weeded and tidied in the past, we think the time has come to engage professional help with this important community memorial.
